Nowomics: stay up-to-date with the latest life science research
Nowomics is a new current awareness service that enables biological scientists to follow genes, species, diseases and keywords to create a personalised news feed of new life science papers and research. It helps take the slog out of keeping up with research literature and provides new and popular
papers in a personalised, searchable news feed instead of sifting though email alerts and tables of content. Data sources include:
- PubMed - NCBI
- MESH - US National Library of Medicine
- Altmetric, tweets and Mendeley bookmarks - altmetric.com
- SNIP journal impact indicator - CWTS
- Entrez Gene, gene names and symbols - NCBI
- HGNC, human gene names and symbols - HUGO
- Homologene orthologs - NCBI

Group study room availability update
Kevin St Library has 2 group study rooms available to book for groups of 2 -5 students who need a space for peer tutoring, to work on group assignments or practise presentations
Rooms A206 and A207 in the library can be booked for 1 or 2 hour slots from 9am daily. Each room has a plasma screen which can be connected to your laptop or to one of the Library student use laptops. The rooms also have whiteboards (markers and erasers are supplied on request).
A207 is the larger group study room and can accommodate two groups of up to five students (separated by a screen).
Bookings are taken on a first come, first served basis at the library desk. Alternatively email, tweet or phone (01-4024894) the library to make a booking.

The Irish Times new Student Hub and free digital subscription for students
The Irish Times launches the Student Hub toda; a website intended to be the primary online resource for third-level students in Ireland. Student Hub will carry news relating to on-campus
developments and issues facing students today, as well as developments new relating to arts, music, health and politics. The aim of the Student Hub is to provide students (no matter what institution they attend) with an opportunity to engage
with each other and to stay informed of what’s going on in each other’s
colleges.
Upon registration, students will qualify, free of charge, for a full Irish Times digital subscription.
From the newspaper’s valuable archive material stretching back over 150 years, the digital
subscription will give students full access to all content on Ireland’s
leading news website. The
Irish Times Breaking News App is free to download as part of
the subscription, giving students the opportunity to keep up to date
with the latest happenings in Ireland and across the globe.
Student subscribers will also be eligible to enter
the Cash For College competition offering the opportunity to win €250
every weekday until the end of term.

Abbreviating Science Journal Titles
Some citation / reference styles require you to abbreviate the journal titles when you're adding them to a bibliography. A couple of useful tools to help find the correct science journal abbreviations are:

If on the other hand you want to find the full journal title from an abbreviation use All that JaS. This resource (Journal Abbreviation Sources) lists the full titles of abbreviated journal titles and conference proceedings

New Google Scholar Button
If you're a fan of Google Scholar you may like to try the new Google Scholar button. It allows you to check for scholarly articles via Google Scholar as you browse the web. Just highlight any article reference while searching, then use the blue icon which will inform you if the article is available via Google Scholar and it it's an open access article. Other functionality includes:
- Find full text on the web or in your institute's library. Select the title of the paper on the page you're reading, and click the Scholar button to find it.
- Transfer your query from web search to Scholar. Press the Scholar button to see top three results; click "full screen" in the lower left of the popup to see them all.
- Format references in widely used citation styles. Press the quote button in the popup to see a formatted reference and copy it into the paper you're writing.

Library opening at 8.30am for semester exams in May
Kevin St Library will open at 8.30am on weekdays for the three weeks of semester exams. These hours will begin on Monday 11th May and end on Friday 29th May. Full library opening hours can be viewed here.

Desktop for printing use only now available
Need to access the Datapac printers in a hurry? A desktop is now available in the Datapac area in the Library for students who need access to a pc for printing purposes only. Just login as usual using your DIT passwords and then access the Datapac print service.
Please note that docs may not be saved to the desktop so please bring a memory key or borrow one at the library desk.
Mobile printing is also available for smart devices and laptops. If the Library is closed or there is a queue remember there are Datapac machines in the Snackery and on the 1st and 4th floors of the Main Building.

Group study rooms for student use
The rooms must be pre-booked at the Library Desk and a maximum of two hour slots are available to book per group. A minimum of two people is required per group.
Students can book a time slot at the Library desk, by phone 01-402-4894 or email us if preferred.

Arrow Readership Maps are live
ARROW, DIT's Institutional Repository is a useful resource for students and researchers. It's a database of publications and research outputs by staff and students of
DIT. All material is free to download provided it is
attributed to the author and is for non-commercial use.
A new feature is now available called live readership maps. These show, in real time, which items are being downloaded and in what part of the world. You can look at the general readership map for Arrow here or more specifically view the College of Sciences and Health map.
There is also a very helpful Research Smarts section which includes bibliometrics FAQS as well as assistance on how to upload/add material to Arrow.
